Semirara Mining boosts workforce for expansion

INTEGRATED energy firm Semirara Mining and Power Corp. (SMPC) said on Friday it bolstered its workforce in the first quarter this year, hiring an additional 387 personnel for significant posts at its Semirara Island mine site as part of its expansion plans.

SMPC President and Chief Operating Officer Victor Consunji said in a disclosure to the local bourse that the company still needed to hire almost 170 people for its mine site within the year.

Vacant positions in its mine site include backhoe and bulldozer operators, cadet engineers, dump truck drivers, motor graders, staff auditors, staff nurses, and water truck drivers.

The company is boosting its coal production to 16 million metric tons (MT) over the next two to three years as it aligns itself with the government’s push for modernized infrastructure, optimal energy pricing, and power stability.

SMPC achieved its highest coal production level of 11.9 million MT in 2016, up from 7.89 million MT in 2015. Most of its coal supply was sold to local power and cement producers.

SMPC, a subsidiary of DMCI Holdings, Inc., is the sole power producer in the country that owns and mines its own fuel source.
